Here we go!

Well, we have had an overwhelming amount of activities on the go here at the homestead. We returned home after our Alaskan vacation to things in full swing and needing to move fast.

We had hoped to have some bigger equipment to help with breaking ground, but quickly were reminded never to depend on anyone but ourselves. So when we landed back on Canadian soil we picked up a tiller and got to work creating rows for the flowers. They have been growing away in our house for months and were taking over... we were all ready for them to get to their final destination.

We knew that our soil would be a battle at the property, as it is dense clay that has not been worked in many years. To help increase its fertility, we will be adding a TON of organic materials. Five gallons of worm castings and a large amount of aged manure were mixed into the beds to help break down the heavy clay.

At final count for the initial planting stage, we have 388 flowers planted. Zinnias, Cosmos, Dahlias, Snapdragons, Osteopernum, Lavender, Celosia, and more were planted in 50 meter rows amongst our growing orchard.

An electric fence was installed around the patches to keep our work and buds safe from all our little wildlife friends... and now we get to sit back and have faith that our hard work will pay off and that life will find a way.

Next steps on the homestead are to finish planting our sunflower fields, plant cover crops to start amending the soil for next year, and prepare for our barn delivery in two weeks so we can get the animals moved in.

We can't wait to open our books up for you-pick appointments in the very near future.
